How To Begin Writing A Wedding Speech

Let’s face it, when it comes to giving a speech many people believe that the hardest part of the speech is merely standing up in front of a group of people with their undivided attention.   Yes! This is very nerve racking for the average person unless they give speeches all the time. Since your about to speak out about a couple during their wedding reception, with family and friends the pressure to make it a good speech is even harder to stomach. The truth is the speech it’s is the focus and not you, for that reason knowing how to begin writing your wedding speech is one of the most critical parts of giving a speech.

Unless you’re a professional speaker the start of your speech should be formulated so that it flows well with the entire rendition. Since most of us are not professional speakers you may want to review some helpful tips to get your piece underway.

  1. Brainstorm- As with any good writer you should always brainstorm your thoughts and what you feel is good content.  Remember this speech is about the couple so you want to make sure you jot down things relevant to them.  Try writing brief segments on what you have observed from the couple, their reactions, interactions etc.

  2. Research- It’s always a good idea to research your content to make sure your speech is customized for the couple.  Talk to other family and friends about their experience with the couple and include other points of view into your own.  In other words take notes and include these things within your brainstorm.

  3. Review sample- Another good method to turn all your notes into a good wedding speech is to review samples of other wedding speech or even consult a how to book on wedding speech writing.  There are a number of sites that have tools and samples to help you formulate your wedding speech.

  4. Be Yourself- We all know that giving a speech can be stressful but what makes it worse is trying to do something unnatural like. Don’t try to be a poet or even being overly dramatic with your delivery.  Stick to what you know and simply be yourself.  While it’s a great idea to maybe start your speech with an appropriate poem or verse of a poem you don’t want to make the poem your speech.

  5. Keep it short and sweet- You don’t want to have a long drawn out speech prepared since you want to keep your audience attention.  Keeping your speech short and concise not only helps you get through it but it also keeps the group interested in what you have to say. So try to keep it less than 2 minutes.

If possible you want to personalize your speech to the couple and beginning your speech should be both captivating and leading. For example: “The first time I met ……” “I always knew these two where meant because” .Remember the hardest part of beginning your speech is the beginning once you get that part together the rest will come.
